Classes at Casa Rosario are four hours a day Monday through Friday, with the choice of either a morning or afternoon session.
  • Morning session: 8:00am – 12:00pm Monday through Friday
  • Afternoon session: 2:00pm – 6:00pm  Monday through Friday

The morning sessions are more popular. If you like to hike and are an early riser, I suggest the afternoon classes. It is cool in the morning until about 10:00 when it gets hot, and it stays hot until about 3:00. It is hard to start hiking around mid-day when it is hot, but easy early in the mornings when it is cool. It is why the Maya rise early to work in the fields.

In all Spanish schools in Guatemala Spanish is taught by immersion, meaning that the classes will be taught in Spanish. The immersion method has the advantage of getting the student comfortable with speaking in Spanish. Beginners do not need to worry. The teachers are very skilled in teaching Spanish to non-Spanish speakers. When a student is stumped because he/she does not know the meaning of a word, the teacher usually can give an English translation of the word. Most of the teachers have a fairly large vocabulary of common English words, and also some in German and French.

The one teacher to one student ratio helps the student optimize their learning and progress rapidly.  Students start off at whatever level they are at and progress, the student, teacher and school working together to overcome any obstacles. There are no textbooks because they are expensive and hard to get in Guatemala, but student has access to a small library of books. Bring whatever text books you feel comfortable with. Unlike other schools Casa Rosario is open 24 hours a day for the students so they can read or study either together or singly whenever they like.

It is strongly recommended that the student live with a family. People who live with a family need to speak Spanish in their daily interaction with the family. They generally become more comfortable with speaking sooner and advance more quickly than those who only take classes.
