| Casa Rosario's cayucos are the most popular extra-curricular activity of the students. They are available free of charge for the use of all students. In early 2002 Casa Rosario acquired a beautiful lake front property. From the shoreline there is a small channel between the rushes where the cayucos can pass into the open lake. On calm days the all-enveloping silence and beauty of the lake make the experience in the cayuco transcendental. | |

| Swimming in Lake Atitlán is something all students will want to do. The lake is cool enough to be refreshing, but warm enough to be enjoyable. You can swim all year long as the temperature remains pretty much the same, it is only on windy days when swimming is not advisable. Do not swim near the docks (muelle) where the pilots of the small motor boats may not see you. | |
Vicente
and Samuel are always open to good ideas. When a student wanted to
know how Vicente had built the cayucos, Vicente gave a class for him and
the other five or so students who expressed interest. Although the student
had finished studying at Casa Rosario, he stayed two weeks longer to learn
how it was built. |

If
you would rather swim in a pool rather than the lake, San Pedro now has a
swimming pool, La Piscina (The Swimming Pool). Students at Casa Rosario get
to use the pool for free the first time. |

There
are many internet cafes in San Pedro. The one pictured here is the one I
prefer. It has the newest computers and is opens earlier and stays open
later than others. It is run by Miguel Sunu, one of the local artists. |

Often
on Thursdays after classes are over in the afternoon, Vicente makes
Guacamole (a delicious receipt of avocados, onions, garlic, chilies
tomatoes, and lime juice). Then as night falls they build a bonfire on the
roof (yes it is concrete) , talk and eat the guacamole with the wonderful
small thick Guatemalan tortillas which will spoil you for the commercial
tortillas sold in the States. More people including musicians came and
played after this photo was taken, but the fire had died down somewhat and
the light was too weak for a photo. This event gives people time to talk
to the other students who have completed their studies and will be leaving
Friday or Saturday. |
