San Juan la Laguna, San Pedro la Laguna's nearest neighbor is a five minute drive or twenty minute walk from San Pedro. In the cool of the morning or evening I recommend walking as the view is beautiful from the road. In the midday heat wait for a pickup truck. San Juan is a small town of about 3000 people. Many people enjoy walking around the lake, or up the road to mountain above San Juan called Las Cristilinas. If you are going to do any hiking, start early, preferably before sunrise because the midday heat can be intense.

One of the most interesting cultural things about San Juan la Laguna are the two images of the Mayan deity Maximon—also known as San Simon. Santiago Atitlán is famous for it's Maximon, but unfortunately it has the feeling of a money making tourist trap. The Maximons in San Juan are virtually unknown, and feel like real remants of ancient Mayan religious belief, oddly mixed with a touch of Catholicism.
