Direct Tourist Van: This is the safest way to get to San Pedro. It is also the most expensive, about $20. If you don't speak Spanish and/or have valuable electronic devices, this is best way.
Direct Bus: Picturesque and cheap (about $4) but crowded and for experienced travelers. Robberies of items on the buses are common especially while in the environs of Guatemala City.
Bus to Panajachel; Boat to San Pedro: Cheap, the terminal to Panajachel in Guatemala City is safer than the one to San Pedro. In many afternoons when the wind picks up the lake can be unpleasant to cross.
Tourist Van to Panajachel; Boat to San Pedro: Just as expensive as the direct van to San Pedro except it is more frequent. You want to arrive by noon so that you can cross the lake while it is calm.
.

.
Bus Direct from Xela (Quetzaltenango): Cheap, direct, crowded, and probably safer than the chicken bus from Guatemala City.
Your own Car or Motorcycle: Easy to miss the turnoff at Kilometer 148.
